Cult Classics and Detailing are delighted to present for sale this extremely rare, 49928 mile Phase 1 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi.

The Car
The 205 GTi needs no introduction really, it is regarded, quite rightly, as one of the greatest hot hatches of all time. Nothing else quite gets that magic mix of driver interaction, good looks, mechanical toughness and sheer fizz quite as perfectly right. You could argue that this is as true today as it was back in 1984, because no-one else has dared to make a hot hatchback quite so singularly involving as a 205 GTI since. At least, not an easily affordable one.
Our particular 205 GTi started its life in 1986 and is one of the very first 1.9s made. The 1.9 engine was introduced in the Phase 1 cars in late 1986 and was replaced by the Phase 1.5 in late ’87, meaning Phase 1 1.9 GTis were only produced for around 12 months, making them the rarest of the 205 GTis.
In 1992, our originally Grey 205 GTi underwent somewhat of a transformation. It was stripped down and the outrageous Dimma replica body kit fitted, it was then completely repainted in Peugeot Sorrento Green, emerging as the car you see today.

The Exterior
It does look truly spectacular, especially considering the conversion was done 31 years ago. The Sorrento green paintwork still has a lovely deep lustre to it and has an almost pearlescent appearance depending on how the light hits it.
There are no signs of any corrosion around the body work or the underside, there are, as you would expect, a few imperfections around the car but nothing to overly detract from the outrageous group b rally car looks.
It rolls on a set of Keskin deep dish wheels with polished rims that match the period look very well. The wheels are corrosion and kerb mark free and the polished rims are in excellent condition but the black faces could benefit from a repaint.
At the front, the familiar 205 face has been replaced with a 4 headlight conversion, mesh grille and huge front splitter, while out the back the big bore Sebring exhaust finishes off the ultra aggressive look perfectly.

The Interior
In contrast to the heavily modified exterior, the inside of our GTi has been left pretty much stock standard. The half leather sports seats are all in nice condition with minimal signs of wear, just some slight shrinkage of the material on the drivers seat base to report. The plastics all present very nicely and the classic bright red carpets are clean and damage free.
The instrument cluster is scratch free and all gauges and warning lights are fully functional.
The headlining is clean and intact and the factory sunroof works just as it should although it is missing one of the plastic runner trims.

The Mechanicals
The car is in generally good mechanical condition. The engine springs into life on the first turn of the key but does have a rough idle, this could possibly be down to the MAF sensor, however once on the move it goes like a rocket. We don’t know if the extent of modifications goes beyond the obvious induction kit but it is probably one of the quickest 1.9 GTis we have ever driven!
The suspension is very taut and features 10 point adjustable Spax dampers on the front and Jemex dampers out back, combined with the non assisted steering and widened track, it handles like a go-kart!
The brakes appear to be standard, discs all round of course being a 1.9 GTi, and pull the car up quickly with no dramas.
Due to fact we don’t have an abundance of history with the car and it has had very little use over the past few years, we have had some recommissioning work carried out including,
Replacement oil, filter and fluids
New injector seals
New spark plugs
New distributor oil seal
New timing belt cover
New rocker cover gasket
New clutch cable
And a new battery.
The car also has a current and advisory free MOT until the end of September.

Conclusion
It is very difficult to mention the Peugeot 205 GTi without feeling the need to chuck words like Legend, Icon or Greatest about and it is true, all these do indeed apply to this masterpiece of a hot hatch. Now imagine taking one of the greatest cars Peugeot ever made and injecting it with a huge dose of anabolic steroids, the result would be the 205 we have here!
It is not a concours show car but it looks so aggressive that you just can’t stop staring at it and it is so visceral to drive that you just can’t stop grinning! Add to that the fact it is a very rare Phase 1 1.9 and is showing just under 50000 miles, all makes this to be a very special little hot hatch indeed.
