Vehicle Description
It’s fair to say we are a little excited about this one! A Mk2 Escort in any guise is a bonafide classic but of all the variants produced over the years, the RS2000 is perhaps the most famous and without a doubt, one of the most collectible. Which is why we are very proud to be able to offer this fantastic 1979 Custom for sale.

The Car
Finished in Solid Black with Black interior our RS is the more desirable Custom model and was registered on 22nd of May 1979. After some investigation, it appears in 1981, it suffered an accident that resulted in the car being re-shelled. Thankfully our RS appears to have lived a fairly quiet life since, passing between owners every couple of years and living for the most part, around the Midlands area.
We believe that the car was comprehensively restored a few years ago and it has just undergone an extensive recommissioning and the end of last year.
The odometer is reading 35125 miles although we have no evidence to prove or dispute that, this isn’t a 1 owner car, so we assume that it is probably 135125. That said, the MOT history shows that it has only covered 997 miles since 2006.

The Exterior
From the “droop snoop” nose to the big rear spoiler, its clear from any angle that this is a special car. The solid black paintwork has a mile deep shine with next to nothing in the way of marks or blemishes. Similarly, the bodywork is incredibly neat and tidy and is free from any corrosion or damage. All the external trim is present and correct and it is wearing the correct twin coachlines, rear quarter panel, boot and front spoiler graphics.
Our Escort rolls on the correct 13” RS four spoke alloys. Finished in silver with polished rims, these classic wheels are shod with period perfect tyres all in very good condition.
Even better, the underside is in exceptionally good condition, it is cleaner than the top side of most!! We can see that repair work has been completed to a very high standard as you will see on the underside photo selection, everything is undersealed and finished in satin black without a trace of corrosion.

The Mechanicals
Much like the bodywork, our RS is in fine mechanical fettle. The High Compression 2.0 Pinto starts on the button and sounds just right. During its recommissioning, it had a lot of new parts including new points, condenser, cam cover gasket, thermostat, timing belt, spark plugs, fuel filter and fluids. Whilst this was being done, the valve clearances were all reset and the carburettor tuned. The engine remains predominately stock with just the addition of a 4 branch tubular manifold leading into a full sports exhaust (which sounds amazing) and a high flow air filter.
The OEM+ style of sympathetic modifications extends to the suspension as well, which features GAZ front coil overs, connected to a World Cup front cross member and adjustable Gaz shocks out the back. The 4 speed ‘Rocket’ box has also been fitted with a quick shift kit which totally transforms gear selection from stir and hope to rifle bolt accuracy.
The result of these upgrades and the general excellent mechanical order make this RS an absolute hoot to drive.

The Interior
It is lovely to see an RS2000 interior retaining its original specification, especially in Custom spec. The quartz clock is there, as are the full height door cards and those wonderful ‘Fish Net’ Recaro seats. Everything is in superb condition. All the seats are unmarked, there is some light patina to the dash panel and tops of the door cards but minimal wear and tear considering they are 44 years old. All instruments and switches are fully functional, even the clock still keeps very good time!
The black headlining is secure and undamaged with no apparent sagging and the carpets are clean and in superb order. At the rear, the boot contains the 5th 4 spoke RS alloy wheel and is finished in unmarked black carpet. Underneath these, the boot floor is straight, completely free from corrosion and is finished in satin black paint.

Conclusion
Not much in the world of classic cars is as universally adored as the MK2 RS2000 and this is an exceptionally well presented example. It has been subject to an extensive high standard refurbishment and has a very desirable specification.
It comes with a large file of paperwork, including copies of every V5 which trace its ownership back to 1979. It is in excellent mechanical condition with a few subtle upgrades aimed at improving everyday driving rather than turning it into a rally car!
All in all a superb, useable example that needs nothing except to be enjoyed.
